Assess the material
Describe which work exposed the material, where it is and whether a report exists. Use existing information and photographs without returning to disturb the area. Distinguish suspect material from asbestos confirmed by analysis.
Prepare your quote
Specify the room, affected element and intended action: removal, drilling or demolition. Compare any existing survey or certificate with the actual scope. For an attic, distinguish lining, panels and floor; for a cellar, pipes, plaster and equipment. These are elements to assess, not confirmation of asbestos.

Before work starts
Inform the contractor. For its work, the Code requires stopping in affected or potentially contaminated areas and restricting access. Resumption requires material analysis, updates to the inventory and management programme, adaptation of the work plan where necessary and suitable protective measures. Describe the discovery without reopening the area.

Can work restart as soon as I send a photograph?
No. Sending a photograph or a form does not authorise work to restart. The person responsible for the work must arrange the necessary checks and measures. A quote enquiry is neither a material analysis nor confirmation that the area can be used.
What does asbestos look like in a house?
There is no single appearance: asbestos was incorporated into different materials. A grey panel, dark adhesive or old plaster is not proof. Building records and existing reports help guide the checks. If in doubt, consult a competent expert or laboratory. Do not scrape the material or try a flame test to decide whether work can continue.
Does a small job require an asbestos survey of the entire house?
FPS Employment explains that, in a private home, the contractor’s employer must identify materials that could expose its workers. The scope therefore depends on the work and affected areas, not simply the stated size of the job. Provide existing documents so the necessary additional checks can be determined.
