Rules in your region
From Overijse, we discuss projects in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. The site’s location determines some of the formalities.
Flanders
In Flanders, material condition and method determine the required competence. An inventory of the work area and applicable notifications form part of preparation. A standard asbestos certificate uses a non-destructive inspection: renovation may require further investigation of concealed materials. Methods other than simple treatments require an approved removal contractor.
Check the environmental/planning permit or exemption with the municipality. Certain projects require a demolition follow-up plan. Sort material streams and plan hazardous-substance removal before the affected demolition stage.
Brussels
Asbestos work may require specific environmental formalities. The application, quantity and method determine the file. The required site inventory must cover affected areas and be prepared independently of the removal company. A visual inventory for routine building management does not replace it.
For demolition and alterations, pay particular attention to inventories, prior removal of hazardous materials and waste separation. Also have the planning conditions specific to your building confirmed.
Wallonia
Check the applicable environmental classification and any declaration or permit. These depend on the activity and site. Contractor competence and the asbestos-waste route must also be defined beforehand.
Have the municipality confirm planning permission or exemption. If the project also requires an environmental permit, a combined permit application is necessary. Prepare a description of work and affected materials to clarify formalities before setting a start date.
